Of the 75 laboratories contacted through the survey, 54 answered, 14 of which are partially or totally devoted to mollusc diseases. In fact, only 4 laboratories are devoted full-time to this work. Of the 14 laboratories that declared to work on the diagnosis of mollusc diseases, 12 stated that they worked with mussels, 12 with oysters, 9 with clams and 8 with other mollusc species. This is coherent with available production information. According to production data in 2001 (FAO source), the main mollusc species in the region are the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis (297,485 tonnes), the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis (131,014 tonnes), the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas (127,323 tonnes, an important part of which is produced on the... |

The aim of the present study was to perform a retrospective review, from 1932 to 1999, in order to establish the number of cases of mammary tumors in dogs in the records at the Pathology Department of Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária - USP, as well as the presence of desmoplasia and cartilaginous and bone metaplasia in 578 of these tumors. Among the 537 malignant tumors, 13.05% were simple tubular adenocarcinomas, 3.91% were complex tubular adenocarcinomas, 7.26% simple papillary adenocarcinomas, 4.28% complex papillary adenocarcinomas , 23.27% simple papillary cystadenocarcinomas ,8.37% complex papillary cystadenocarcinomas,16.38% simple solid adenocarcinomas ,6.70% complex solid adenocarcinomas, 2.04% simple spindle cell carcinomas, 1.11% simple spindle... |

Considering the epizootics which affect the French stock of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis (Grizel, 1985), trials to introduce an Australian oyster, Ostrea angasi, have been undertaken. The spat produced in a hatchery from breeders imported from Australia were reared in the south ofBrittany and in Normandy (Bougrier et al., 1986). Following mass mortalities (65% of individuals) a haplosporidian was observed in this species. Sporogenesis of the parasite was studied using Iight and electron microscopy. |

Since 2008, mass mortalities of 1-yr-old Crassostrea gigas associated with the ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 μVar have occurred along all the coasts of France when seawater temperature reaches 16 to 17°C. The present study aimed to characterize the effect of temperature on oyster survival in combination with OsHV-1 DNA quantification by standard real-time PCR and total vibrio population levels in oyster tissues. To examine the effect of seawater temperature on disease transmission and related mortality of oysters, cohabitation experiments were conducted between healthy naïve oysters and oysters previously exposed to field conditions in areas where mortalities were occurring. Oysters initially maintained in controlled conditions (free of mortality and negative... |

Many algal blooms ("red tides" or "brown tides") may be noxious for finfish, either causing anoxia through decay process, clogging the gills or producing specific toxins. Since the 1970's, records of the incidence of injury and mortality to wild and cultured fish due to toxic phytoplankton have increased. It was even demonstrated that toxic algal blooms are spreading in intensity, geographic distribution and number of algal species involved. Thus, algal blooms are becoming one of the major economic threat to fisheries and fish culture industry. This review deals with the literature available (more than 250 references) on the occurrence of fish kills associated with worldwide algal blooms. Their negative effects on fish that result in economic losses are... |

Complement-depleted and -non-depleted BALB/c mice were inoculated with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis promastigotes into the hind footpad to study the role of the complement system in cutaneous leishmaniasis. Total serum complement activity was measured by hemolytic assay and C3 fragment deposit at the inoculation site was determined by direct immunofluorescence in the early period of infection, i.e., at 3, 24, 48 h and 7 days post-infection. The inflammatory reaction and the parasite burden were evaluated in the skin lesion at 7 and 30 days post-infection. Total serum complement activity decreased in the early phase of infection, from 3 to 24 h, in non-depleted mice compared to non-infected and non-depleted mice. C3 fragment deposit at the site of... |

Recently, an increasing number of research teams are engaged in developing DNA-based diagnostic techniques for mollusc pathogens. These techniques are slowly moving from development in specialised laboratories for research purposes, to routine application and are expected to find an increasing use in routine disease monitoring programs in mollusc aquaculture and in efforts to prevent the spread of pathogens within and between nations. Considering the probable development and interest in these diagnostic techniques, the potential for wide applications in aquaculture and the inherent problems currently associated with their use, it appears necessary to address these issues. |
